Funk/Soul Friday tune: On and On

The second record I ever bought was a song by Glady Knight and the Pips.  I wanted to have that soulful voice of hers along with my own set of backup singers.  Without becoming too covetous, being a semi-good Catholic and all, I opted instead to get my Gladys on by purchasing all of her records, from vinyl to tape to CD.

Gladys Knight liked to weave in all different sort of funk/soul feel in her music, but “On and On” is a particular favorite.  This is a foot stomping song that gladly departed from the more commercial vibe of “Midnight Train to Georgia”.  The difference in style is evidenced in her more street fashion, hair and that get down dance of hers.  I tried to imitate it once, clumsily stepping on a classmate’s toe in the process.

This is an odd Soul Train video as Ms. Knight decides to stop lip synching towards the end of the song.  I bet she just wanted to hear herself sing, just the way the rest of us do.

Happy Friday!
