Monster great: Mutated bear thug in the woods

John Frankenheimer’s “Prophecy” was that environmental message film of the 70s where gigantic animal mutations roamed the peaceful American woods terrorizing loggers, locals and Talia Shire. At first, we are greeted with extra large fish which, of course, is cooked and eaten because no one really questions why such massive sea life should be found so far outside of Tokyo Bay.

Soon, the rest of mutated nature rears its head in the shape of ill-formed bear cubs. The local scientist steals a bear cub for further study, which immediately calls for another monster rescue. The cub’s mother, also affected by local pollution, is unsightly, a hairless bear with melted skin who is evil, violent and does not even recognize a call to friendship after ripping apart its only fan, an old Native American tribesman who greets the bear as if it were Santa Claus.

“Prophecy” had an interesting premise but falls into that unintentionally funny category, especially since Talia Shire looks as if she would rather be hit by a truck rather than appear in this movie.
