Monster greats: Belial

“Basket Case” is one of the original comedy horrors of its time, a send up of amusing proportions with a tinier movie monster whose peculiarities seem quite pronounced.

We start with Duane, a fairly sweet-faced looking male in his typical 80’s style hair and fashion, who likes to haul a picnic basket where ever he goes.  He arrives in New York with the basket in tow, intent on seeking revenge against the doctor who sliced away Belial, the parasitic basket living brother that was once attached to Duane’s side.

As in most horror films, especially ones with vengeance in mind, things go awry.  Duane takes on a romantic interest, which is where the audience discovers that little blobbish Belial possesses an enormous appetite for both violence and sex.  While the former is expected, since living in a wicker basket case is most likely a gateway to rampage and murder, the latter is a bit jarring.  He is blob of molted skin, melted face and muscular arms that allow Belial to scuttle across floors and climb objects at high speeds to carry out his acts of violence.

The amount of blood in “Basket Case” would make Samuel Peckinpah proud.

The success of the original “Basket Case” film spawned two sequels, both of them highly amusing.  In later films, Belial finds love with another deformed parasitic twin.  Their life and eventual spawns provide plenty of mayhem to sustain two worthwhile, very bloody films.
