Monster great: Reptilicus

Nothing says Denmark more than a giant reptile snaking its way around overhead passes, regenerating its blown-to-smithereens body parts so that it enjoys near immortality.

“Reptilicus” is a film from my early childhood, a Saturday night favorite on “Creature Features”. The monster escapes its science lab to wreak havoc on Copenhagen, which seems like a beautiful urban center until Reptilicus destroys its many parts. And while a giant reptile (snake, really) seems so Gidorah Jr., Reptilicus has every right to stand toe-to-toe with its Asian brothers. It has incredible armor skin and a nasty temperament. While other monsters just smash things while getting from point A to point B, Reptilicus employs the coil-until-it-snaps technique when approaching buildings, and also unleashes green goo. With that regenerative ability, Reptilicus is a Godzilla level Grade A monster.

Despite the ? in place of a “The End” or “Fin”, there have been no sequels.

  1. Good stuff. Can’t say I saw this one, and I was an avid Creature Features kid back in the day. The first half of the moviue looks like it was shot by the National Tourist Council of Denmark.
