When I offer film reviews through this blog, bear in mind that I do it for short films that I find appealing. In presenting these reviews to the reader, I do it with the intention of inspiring the individual to watch the movie. I am not offering film commentary. Just a review with enough of a teaser, because it is my opinion that people should form their own ideas on a film without being told the who/what/when/where/why.
I was asked earlier this week to change a review by a director of a film I reviewed here. He said that I missed the intention of his movie, and that I should do a rewrite. I will, of course, not be doing a re-write of anything that I have put up for review. If you are looking for film commentary, there are plenty of magazines that offer the analytical dissecting of films that appeal to many ardent movie critics. I offer it in some of my blog posts, but not in film reviews.
Why not?
Most people just want a simple recommendation. The films featured here are all from another country, and we Americans are often hard-pressed to sit through subtitles for entertainment. Hence, I review appealing, worthwhile films with the hope that some people would read through the subtitles to find the treasures that these movies have to offer.
I have spent many years watching and critiquing movies. In the process, I have an enormous respect for anyone who takes the time to make a film, provided it is done with the intention of entertaining and telling a story. For this reason, I stay away from most Hollywood films, as I have no real interest in 3 hour long franchise films whose only intention is to sell products through strategic placement and to showcase special effects.
I hope you continue to enjoy the films I put on this blog. Films all over the world, especially short ones done by first-time directors or those who just want to tell stories, are one of the greatest tools we have to increase our cultural awareness of other countries and people.
